Report on Manuscripts in Various Collections …

By Great Britain. Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts

Sm Thomas Tresame to Edward Maxey, servant to Sir
Francis Walsingham, Principal Secretary of State.

1588, May 80. Bugden.—Yours of the 16th of this present I have received, and according to your request, hasten my answer to you. “Your Master his honourable dealing with me I cannot in any wise misdoubt, who dealeth true, honourably and justly with all persons. Very glad am I to have my cause wielded by his honour, who knoweth my poor and deep distressed estate, and how difficult it is for any in same predicament with me to take up money to pay debts withal. . . It cannot be unknown to his honour how it standeth upon my undoing, should I fail in half-yearly payment of such great sums of money as by a late statute I am bounden to pay into her Majesty’s Exchequer.”

The principal debt [due from Baull] is 400Z., to which value he had fat cattle, “of such price as was every man’s money. … I have sold the like since for greater prices and shorter days of payment, though wools wonderfully fallen, almost half in half, money generally more scant by much, and myself in most need and want.”

To conclude, I am bound to pay 300/. into the Exchequer at the end of Michaelmas term next, and 300/. more in Michaelmas, 1589. If Mr. Secretary will discharge me of one of these two bonds, and pay me lOOi. at Michaelmas, 1590, I will discharge Ball’s bonds, or assign them to such as his honour shall nominate, if the Exchequer will permit of such course, these bonds being assigned over to her Majesty’s use. Draft. 3 pp.

Underwritten: Directions by Sir Thomas to one of his servants to copy out the above in a small hand, “because the letter is long, and is like to come to Mr. Secretary’s perusing.”

Sir Thomas Tresame to Robert Baude, in Foster Lane.

1588, June 2. Bugden.—Requesting him to lend a dear friend of his 500Z., explaining the security which would be offered for the same, and asking that the matter may not be talked about, as his friend would not have it go from one moneyed man to another, “to have it registered in their books or to hang in the mouths of brokers.” Draft. 1 p.

Underwritten: Order to George [Levens] for the letter to be written out legibly, to be sent away to Mr. Baud.

to Sir Thomas Tressam at Bugden.

1588, June 13. The Inner Temple.—Mr. Flamsteed has shown me the draft of a book between you and Mr. Zowche of a purchase wherein you use my name among others. I would gladly pleasure you, “but since (I am informed) the purchase you have in hand is a thing which my Lord Chancellor is also in hand to purchase, so as some unkindness may thereby grow; and in respect of many favours my Lord showeth me, as on whom I most depend, he may conceive evil of me to be a party in anything that were to his displeasure. Therefore, as mine advice were, yourself without great cause should not deal in it if it be so. So, good sir, if you mean to deal, yet use rather some other of your friends than my name in it.” | p. Signaturetorn away.

Sir Thomas Tresame to Edward Maxey, servant to Sir Francis Walsingham, Principal Secretary to her Majesty.

1588, June 29. Buckden.—The solicitor of my law causes has delivered me your letter concerning Bawll’s debts. “Where you offer me as good composition as the residue hath, I thank you, but to help me thereto, I will give you 40l.” One of the two parties mentioned by you is Mr. Spencer, my countryman, whose debts, like mine, were for fat cattle, and not for usury as the other creditors were. “How Mr. Massham, Mr. Cooke, Mr. Tempeste, my cousin Throkmorton, Mrs. Hoolte, the widow, are paid you well know, so do I, and all since his bankrowting. I see no reason, Mr.Maxey, why I should be worse dealt with, that have deserved best, and worst may bear it.” [The rest of the letter contains divers proposals for arranging a composition.] Draft. l%pp.

MINT IN STAMFORD BEYOND THE BRIDGE.

We learn from a Paper on this subject, written by Samuel Sharpe, Esq., F.S.A., F.G.S., that this mint flourished from the time of its concession by Edgar throughout the remainder of the Anglo-Saxon period, and that coins in profusion were issued from it. After commenting on the extraordinary number of Anglo-Saxon coins which have been found in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, and the large proportion which the Stamford coins bear to the whole, this writer proceeds, “This circumstance would indicate either a very large issue and circulation of the coins of the Stamford mint, or a more than proportionate contribution from the town of Stamford to the ‘Danegeld,’ or Dane tax, an enhancement, perhaps, attributable to its Danish connections.” Amongst the names of the moneyers of this mint he finds Godelef, Living, and Wulfword or Pulfword, which may be supposed to represent the Groodliffs, Livings, and Pulfords of the present day.

15 Aug 1734 Court: William Allen makes oath that pursuant to a Warrant from Colonel John
Fleming himself and George Stovall, Joell Chandler, Young Stokes, Richard Parker,
James Embro, John Thomas, Michael Chetwood, Nathaniel Maxey and John Redford
ranged each six days in search of Robert Hendrick who was supposed to be killed by
the Indians, and that Richard Ward ranged five days and that to his knowledge they
have received no satisfaction for the same… [Goochland County Order Book 3,
p287]
Robert Hendrick’s identity is unknown. There is an intriguing possibility though. He
may have been a son of Adolphus Hendrick. We know that Adolphus Hendrick had
surveyed land in Goochland, later Cumberland, County sometime before late 1736
(see below). It is possible that Robert Hendrick is a son sent to explore for land. In
support of this (admittedly wild) theory, I note that five of these persons who were
searching for him (Ward, Chandler, Parker, Radford, and Maxey) had land south of
the James in eastern present Cumberland County. All five were located no more than
five miles from Adolphus Hendrick’s later patent, all to the east. Four others (Allen,
Stokes, Stovall, and Chitwood) held land just east of the county line in what would
become Powhatan, perhaps 7-8 miles away. Given the sparse population at that time,
Robert Hendrick must have been killed fairly close to these men.
There is also a single record in Orange County abstracted deeds of a Robert
“Kendrick” witnessing a bill of sale a few months earlier between two King William
County residents (Dorman, p81).

Heraldic—Can any of your readers tell me the names of the families to whom the following three coats belonged I 1. A chevron betwixt three bucks trippant, on the chevron three fusils (or lozenges). 2. Ermine, a fess engrailed betwixt three horses' heads couped. 3. A chevron betwixt three trefoils. With the exception of the field of No. 2, no tinctures are given. I found the arms in an old sketch; the coat preceding them is that of Maxey, followed by that of Crispe. I believe them to be the arms borne by Nathaniel Maxey, of London, who married the daughter and heiress of Sir Rowland Crispe. Nathaniel Maxey died in 1708. He bore the same arms as the Maxeys of Salnighall, co. Essex, and was presumably of that family. Sir Rowland Crispe was the son of Dr. Tobias Crispe by his wife Mary, daughter of Rowland Wilson. Dr. Tobias Crispe was son of Ellis Crispe, of London, who married Hester, daughter of John Ireland. She, after her husband's death, married Sir Walter Pye, Kt., Attorney of the Court of Wards. Ellis Crispe died Sheriff of London in 1625. Any information as to the ancestors of Nathaniel Maxey would be gratefully received. C H.
"Monfeti Theatrcm Insectorum," London, 1634.—I have a book thus entitled about which I am desirous of ohtaining particulars. The volume is particularly interesting to me as an entomologist, being, I believe, the first book published in England devoted wholly to insects. Can any correspondent say how many copies were printed, and at what price it was sold, and whether the book is now generally to be met with, or give me any other particulars? Was any book published on the Continent prior to this date (a.d. 1634) on insects? W. Gardner.
Road retain some of the only coherent Victorian terraces left in the
parish of Woolwich, and Government House, a large officer’s house of the
1780s, is the last standing of the many late-Georgian houses that once
looked across Woolwich Common.
Burrage Estate
The lands covered in this chapter were formerly all part of the Burrage
estate, the greater portion of which lay in Plumstead parish, but which
extended westwards into Woolwich as far as Green’s End, Cholic Lane
and Ditchwater (sometimes Dishwater) Lane (now Nightingale Place),
another appellation connected to the outflow of springs. The name
Burrage derives from Bartholomew Burghersh the elder, the second Lord
Burghersh (d.1355), a royal councillor who held this land, and whose
name comes from Burwash, Sussex, where he had inherited other
estates. Burwash Court, or Burridge House, stood near present-day
Burrage Road in Plumstead. The 300-acre estate passed through the
hands of other families before Nathaniel Maxey, a London merchant,
purchased it in 1702. His daughter married James Pattison (d.1761) and
the estate passed to their son, Nathaniel Pattison (d.1784). His brother,
Gen. James Pattison (d.1805), was an eminent Woolwich soldier. He
commanded the Royal Artillery in Portugal during the Seven Years War
and in New York in the American War of Independence. Between wars,
he lived in Woolwich Warren, serving as Lieutenant Governor of the Royal
Military Academy and then, in 1787–8, as Commandant of the Garrison.
Despite this link, Nathaniel had declined in 1772 to sell part of the estate
to the Board of Ordnance. But in 1808, after the Board had acquired
Woolwich Common, his son, Nathaniel Maxey Patttison, was persuaded
to sell it the southern parts of his lands in the parish of Woolwich (the
whole of Mill Hill Field, more than twenty-eight acres, nearly everything
between the southern part of Woolwich New Road and Brookhill Road).
Pattison and the Board split the cost of forming what became Brookhill

Runwell: Revd. A. Suckling. Memorials (1845)

The following is taken from Revd. Alfred Suckling’s book, ‘Memorials of the antiquities and architecture, family history and heraldry of the County of Essex’ (John Weale, London, 1845).

Runwell is a rectory, valued in the king’s books at £13 per annum, of which the yearly tenths are fixed at £1 6s. The church is a regular structure, comprising a nave, chancel, and two aisles, with a square tower containing four bells. In the chancel is the following inscription in old English characters:-1 Here doe lie Ewstace Sulyard, Esquier, and Margarett Ayloff, sometime his wyfe, who had to her first husbande Gregory Ballet, Esquier, by whome she had yssue Dorothie, her only daughter and heyer, arid now wyfe unto Anthonie Maxey, Esquier; and to her second husband she had the sayd Ewstace Sulyard, between whome they had yssue Edward Sulyard, Esquier, their sonne and heyer, and Mary, Margaret, Jane, Anne, and Bridget, their daughters; and to her thirde and last husbande she had William Ayloff; of Brittens, Esquier, by whome she had no yssue; which said Ewstace Sulyard died in Februarie, in the first yeare of King Edwarde the Sixte, and the said Margaret died the fifte of Februarie in the ix and twentyeth yeare of our soueragne queene Elizabeth.Occupying a most beautiful situation, about a mile and a half from the church stands the remains of

Biography

The family background of Hugh Mortimer, who was to become a friend and counsellor of Henry of Manmouth and an important figure in diplomatic negotiations with France and Burgundy under Henry IV and Henry V, is surprisingly obscure, and the names of his parents are known only from his will. There is no doubt, however, that his branch of the family was closely connected with the Despensers, and the first known record of Hugh dates from March 1375 when he and his brother, Michael, were mustered for service in Brittany in the retinue of the then Lord Despenser, Edward. This lord, who died before the end of the year, clearly made a deep impression on young Mortimer, who in his will drafted 40 years later to ask to be buried near his tomb. It is unclear whether the next 20 years in the employment of the young heir, Thomas, but certainly on 10 Sept. 1394 he took out royal letters of protection as going to Ireland in his retinue. Mortimer then nominated Sir William Burcester* and Stephen Makesey as his attorneys at home, which same two men stood surety for him in May in May 1396 when he secured at the Exchequer custody of land in Redmarley D’Abitot (on the borders of Worcestershire and Gloucestershire). About this time Lord Despenser granted Mortimer for term of his life an annual rent of £40 from the manors of Thorley and Wellow on the Isle of Wight.

imprisonment of John of Balliol in the Tower, \ Aug. 1296
(p. 237). With this event the book terminates. The text
was originally succeeded by three blank leaves, evidently
intended for future matters of interest, should such occur,
but which are now occupied by documents in a later hand.
We may conclude, therefore, that the work was begun in
1295, and completed in July or August, 1296. The writer
of the MS. was evidently not the author, for there are
numerous clerical errors — words omitted in the text and
inserted in the margin — words written twice — and occasion-
ally curious misspellings, as though the scribe did not
understand Latin, or only imperfectly.

I. The Manuscript.

The inanuscript of this work, the greater part of which
is now printed for the first time, is preserved in the British
Museum (MSS. Harl. 3601 )^ It is written on vellum, in a
large, uniform, and very clear hand. Unfortunately it is
not dated, but intemal evidence enables us to supply this
deficiency.

The list of rents, tenants, etc, given in Book VI L, is
dated 1295 (p. 282). Again, in the life of Edward I,
the last event recorded is the second Welsh war (p. 63),
ending with the surrender of Madoc, May, 1295. After
this two-thirds of a page are left blank. Further on
the arrival of two papal legates is recorded as having
taken place anno dotnini M^.CCy, nonagesimo quinto
